Hooded Merganser sighting |
|
November 8, yesterday, I watched several male and female hooded mergansers on the pond in Middlefork Savanah at the south end, closest to the big blue water reservoir just south of route 60. They were magnificent! My first sighting of Hooded Mergansers.
Also saw a group of green winged teal, a few belted kingfishers and a water bird I did not know which a long black wide bill and dark head and neck, mostly one color. A northern Shoveler? |

weasel sighting in Skokie Preserve?? |
|
As I was walking through Skokie Nature Preserve on Tuesday, August 2nd, before 8am, I saw something run across the path up ahead. At first I thought it was a squirrel, but as I got closer, it ran up a tree and peered down at me. It looked like a ferret with a long sleek body, a small 'roundish' head, and big eyes. It was the size of a squirrel but much more slender. I truly don't know what it was. Any ideas? Thank you. |

Sighting of Black Crowned Night Heron |
|
I walk the Middlefork trails almost daily and on August 7, I saw my first black crowned night heron. He was sitting motionless in a bush close to the lake at the end of the trail (before reaching Route 60). I saw him again today in almost the same place. I would like to know if you have any other reports on sighting this bird.
Thank you.

Nature's Way |
|
Something I'd never seen before: a robin darting out of a low bush in pursuit of a butterfly. The butterfly zigged and zagged, like broken field running, and managed to stay ahead of the robin for awhile. I could see, however, that the robin was closing the gap. Imagine: a robin so single-mindedly determined, and a butterly fleeing a predator. How uncommon these sights were! |

A Common Nighthawk flew over Mellody Preserve Thursday afternoon at about 2:30 p.m. There were four Great Egrets in the preserve's pond.

Long-eared owl |
|
While cross-country skiing on Sunday, Febuary 8th at 3:50pm, Brenda Dick and Gay Georgi saw a long-eared owl. We first sighted the owl near the Dixon's pond on the south trail of Shaw Prairie. The owl then perched in the thick underbrush along the trail. The three of us then spent the next five minutes surveying one another. It is rumored that a long-eared owl was spotted in this same spot a couple of years ago. |

sand hill cranes in the area |
|
Has anyone noticed the arrival of sandhill cranes around Bennett Meadow (part of the Skokie River Preserve)? For the past few days I have seen what I think is a sandhill crane...large, graceful, gray bird. |

bagpipe question |
|
I believe a kind of bagpipe originated in ancient Greece using goat skin for the bag. Open Lands Bagpipes originated by the McCutcheons and Judsons at Ragdale, was reborn in 1980? as a celebration for Open Lands on the old Judson property (now Shaw Prairie)

Does anyone know where the bagpipe started? Has it always been Scottish? (Fiona) |

Autumnal Equinox |
|
12 hours of day, 12 hours of night. And from now until December 21, we mark the waning days. Just think: in only three months the days will start to get longer. But this darkness is an essential part of nature's cycle. Without such a resting period, plant life would be quite different. (Betsy) |

Flock of goldfinches |
|
It must be goldfinch nesting time! I spotted a group of six this morning zooming past the barn behind my house, and what a sight that was! |
