Seasonal Environmental Educator
This position offers college students and graduates an
opportunity to gain professional experience in the field of
environmental education.
Responsibilities:
Leading outdoor field studies for kindergarten through high school
age students and assisting in public programs for children, families
and adults. Public program tasks include natural history research,
prop construction and curriculum planning. Also assist in the
everyday running of the Lockhart Family Nature Center, which may
include answering the phone, greeting the public and working with
educational volunteers.
Qualifications: Applicants must at
least 18 years of age either enrolled in or graduated from a college
program in biology, environmental science, education, or a related
field. Outgoing personality and respect for the natural world is a
must. Teaching experience and familiarity with the natural history
of our region is a plus. Prefer that applicant be able to work the
spring position and as a camp counselor during our Eco-Adventure
Camp in the summer.
Duration: Eight weeks, from April 4
through May 30th 2008 with possibility for summer employment as an
Eco-Adventure Camp Counselor. 40 hours per week: Monday through
Friday, occasional nights or weekends.

Summer Camp Counselor
Work with outdoor-oriented people, supervising and leading fourth
and fifth grade students in a local summer camp. This is a wonderful
opportunity for environmental educators and environmental science
students to gain teaching experience.
Responsibilities: Supervision of a crew of eight
or nine campers Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the
Lockhart Family Nature Center. Daily activities include
investigating local ecosystems, teaching outdoor skills such as fire
building, camp cooking, tent camping, knot tying, first aid and
animal tracking, canoeing and biking.
Qualifications: Those applying should have
knowledge of local ecosystems and the flora and fauna of
northeastern Illinois. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
and have a valid Illinois Drivers License. All applicants must have
experience supervising or leading children in outdoor activities.
Outdoor experience in camping and canoeing is a plus.
Training begins June 11th and the first session of camp runs from
June 16th through July 3rd. The second session of camp begins July
14th and runs through August 1st. The third session runs from August
4th through August 15th. You must be available for all three
sessions. Pay is $8.00 to $10.00 per hour depending on experience.
