About Eco-Adventure Camp

Campers discover a journal written in 1838 by a young traveler named Emma. She describes her explorations: from the shores of Lake Michigan -- through ravines, woodlands, prairies and wetlands -- to the meandering Des Plaines River. By foot, canoe and bike, campers follow this old journal and a pre-settlement map to rediscover the wild places of Lake Forest.

Our goal is to develop children's skill and confidence through positive outdoor experiences, and to help children make lasting connections to the wild places and open spaces near their home.

Campers learn important outdoor life skills such as canoeing, camping, shelter-building, first-aid, fire-making and cooking. They investigate wetland, ravine and prairie habitats in Open Lands preserves.

After mastering basic outdoor skills, campers set up tents for an overnight camp-out next to the Jens Jensen Pond at our Mellody Farm Nature Preserve. Other recreation experiences include swimming at Lake Forest Beach, a canoe trip on the Des Plaines River and a bike ride through Lake County Forest Preserves.

For more information about this wonderful daycamp experience, call the Lockhart Family Nature Center at 847-482-1928.
