GENERAL PRINCIPLES

Lake Forest Open Lands Association ("LFOLA") has created this web site to provide an informative resource for our members and members of the public who are interested in our mission to preserve our natural environment through land acquisition, habitat restoration, public education and conservation advocacy and to enable our constituency to become more involved in helping fulfill that mission. Fulfilling this purpose often necessitates an exchange of information, some of it personal in nature, via the Internet. We recognize that visitors to our site may be concerned about how we use the personal information they choose to share with us and we appreciate your trust that we will use this information carefully and sensibly.

To help address some of those concerns we have developed the privacy policy articulated below based on the following principles:

We believe you have the right to:

  • Know what personally identifiable information is collected through the web site.
  • How the information is used.
  • With whom the information may be shared.
  • What choices are available to you regarding the collection, use and distribution of the information.
  • The security procedures that are in place at LFOLA to protect the loss, misuse or alteration of information under the Associations control.
  • How you can access, correct and update your information.

We encourage you to take the time to read our privacy policy and those of any web site you visit.

PRIVACY POLICY

By visiting our Web site, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Notice. Furthermore, when you communicate with us electronically, we may communicate with you by e-mail or by posting notices on this site. You agree that all Agreements, Notices, Disclosures and other communications that we provide to you electronically satisfy any legal requirements that such communications be in writing.

PERSONAL INFORMATION
In general, when you visit our Web site you do so anonymously, except for "cookies" which are a part of every Web server's browser program. (See below.) We encourage you to visit our Web site often to remain updated on our activities. There are, however, occasions when we may ask you for additional information so that we may better respond to your needs and so that you can help us better fulfill our mission. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Personally identifiable information will be collected in order for you to become a member of LFOLA online.
  • Personally identifiable information will be collected when you register for one of our courses, programs or special events online.
  • Personally identifiable information will be collected when you order one of our products online.
  • Personally identifiable information will be collected when you make a contribution to LFOLA.
  • Personally identifiable information will be collected when you send us an e-mail. We will not use this information for any purpose other than to respond to your e-mail.
  • We may require personally identifiable information from you from time to time to respond to survey or demographic questions. In some of these instances you can respond anonymously.

THIRD PARTY ACCESS TO INFORMATION

  • From time to time, personally identifiable information is made available to other non-profit organizations and occasionally to for-profit organizations, unless you request otherwise. Your information will not, however, be shared with these organizations without the prior approval of the Executive Committee of LFOLA. If you would prefer to keep your personal information from being shared with these organizations you may choose a confidentiality option when we request this information from you online, or by calling us at 847-234-3880 and speaking with Noelle Moore, between the hours of 9 - 5, Monday through Friday, U.S. Central Time.
  • From time to time it is necessary for us to employ other companies and individuals to perform functions on our behalf such as fulfilling merchandise orders, delivering packages, addressing mailings, sending e-mails, removing repetitive information from membership and donor lists, processing credit card payments and other tasks we either cannot perform or choose not to perform ourselves. We use a Web site service provider, host and a donor list maintenance provider. These companies or individuals have access to personal information necessary to perform their functions, but are not authorized by us to use it for other purposes.
  • We may find it necessary to disclose your personal information to respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process. We may also need to use the information to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims. Additionally, we may need to share information in order to investigate, prevent or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, violations of LFOLA's Conditions of Use or as otherwise required by law.
  • LFOLA's Web site provides links to third-party Web sites. Since we do not control these Web sites, we encourage you to review the privacy policies posted on these third-party sites.
  • In the unlikely event that LFOLA merges or becomes affiliated with another non-profit organization, of course our membership, donor lists, class registration lists and other relevant information will be shared with that other organization.
  • Donor and member lists may be published in our Annual Report which is available to the public.
  • Of course, LFOLA will never sell, rent, share or otherwise disclose personally identifiable information about you for commercial purposes or for purposes other than to facilitate accomplishing our mission as stated in the first paragraph of this Privacy Notice.

SECURITY OF YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION
We will take appropriate steps to protect your privacy through our own internal office procedures which include limiting access to personal and credit card information to those staff members who need the information to perform their function and may include encryption. Likewise, we will protect your personal information in storage. CHILDREN

  • LFOLA does not sell products for purchase by children, only by adults. If you are under 18, you need to use your parent or guardian to purchase a product
  • We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If we learn that we have personal information on a child under the age of 13, we will delete that information from our systems. LFOLA encourages parents to go online with their children. Here are a few tips to help make a child's online experience safer:
  • Teach kids never to give personal information, unless supervised by a parent or responsible adult. Personal information includes name, address, phone, school, etc.
  • Know the sites your kids are visiting and which sites are appropriate.
  • Look for Web site privacy policies. Know how your child's information is treated.
  • Check out the Federal Trade Commission's site here

USE OF COOKIES

  • What are Cookies? Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that we transfer to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser to enable our systems to recognize your browser. This technology helps us store useful information that enables our Web site to remember you when you return. It also helps us when you register for one of our programs, or to store some history about the parts of our sites that are of greatest interest to you so you can navigate our site more easily.
  • How does LFOLA use Cookies? We use both session ID cookies and persistent cookies. For the session ID cookie, once users close the browser, the cookie simply terminates. A persistent cookie is a small text file stored on the user's hard drive for an extended period of time. Persistent cookies can be removed by following Internet browser help file directions.
  • By setting a cookie on our site, users would not have to log in a password more than once, thereby saving time while on our site. If users reject the cookie, they may still use our site. The only drawback to this is that the user will be limited in some areas of our site. Persistent cookies enable us to track and target the interest of our users to enhance the experience on our site. We do not share your profile with third parties except as outlined above.

CHOICE / OPT-OUT

  • Our users are given the opportunity to "opt-out" of having their information used for purposes not directly related to our site at the point where we ask for information. For example, our order form has an "opt-out" mechanism so users who buy a product from us, but don't want any marketing material, can keep their e-mail address off of our lists.
  • Users who no longer wish to receive our newsletter and other promotional communications may opt-out of receiving these communications by replying with "unsubscribe" in the subject line of the e-mail or by using our Web site's unsubscribe function . We also offer an opt-out mechanism on the member information pages or the user may contact us by phone at 847-234-3880, by e-mail at bmartens[at]lfola[dot]org or by regular mail at Lake Forest Open Lands Association, 272 E.
